Boulder food & community idealism to be celebrated on March 16.
A decade ago, when The Kitchen opened its doors just west of Boulder’s Pearl Street Mall, it seemed like an impossibly idealistic, even impractical, way to operate a restaurant. Founders Hugo Mathieson and Kimball Musk freely used words and phrases like “fostering community,” “organic,” “local,” “natural,” “filtered water,” “compostable,” “sustainability,” “renewable energy” and more. Turns out they were pioneers in green dining concepts that are now hardly uncommon.
Diners responded to these wholesome foods and green practices. First, the partners expanded to the second floor, calling the more lounge-like, limited-menu restaurant The Kitchen Upstairs. Later, they took over the space directly to the west and opened The Kitchen Next Door. Along the way, they expanded to Denver, first with The Kitchen Denver on the 16th Street Mall and just last month, another Kitchen Next Door, this one in Glendale, although it is not next door to any member of The Kitchen family but does share the original’s “community pub” ambiance. On the horizon are The Kitchen Fort Collins and The Kitchen Next Door Union Station, again in Denver. Neither of these has web pages yet.
To celebrate this eventful decade, The Kitchen is hosting special events at several locations on Sunday, March 16 with thanks to loyal customers, “for allowing The Kitchen to thrive in this community for the past ten years.” The Kitchen’s communiqué continues, “From the opening of The Kitchen Boulder on March 16, 2004, we have cultivated connections with local purveyors, farmers, ranchers, craftsmen, architects, delivery drivers, florists and so many others. These people, along with our amazing chefs, cooks, managers, servers, hosts, and most importantly, our guests, have created The Kitchen family. We couldn’t have fathomed the beautiful friendships we would share with our customers and members of this community, and we are wildly grateful.”
The Kitchen’s generous thanks is expressed with their “$10 Day”:
- The Kitchen Boulder, The Kitchen Upstairs Boulder and The Kitchen Denver will offer an appetizer and entréin or call for reservations. (Find the numbers by clicking on the links above.)
