Breakfast at the Buff

Boulder classic serves hearty breaktasts, lunches & friendliness

P1010940The Buff Restaurant, a classic breakfast and lunch eatery in the heart of Boulder, was purchased by the present owners in 1995, but it feels as if it has been around forever. It is physically part of, but not operationally part of, the Golden Buff Motel, and both motel and restaurant are old school and affordable.

The portions are generous, the service is friendly and very efficient, and unless you show up mid-morning on a weekend or at a time when CU is playing at home, there’s seldom a long wait. The Buff is a student fave for its prices and portions, and a family fave because it is really kid-friendly. Go at a slow time and you’ll see a tower of highchairs.Go at a peak time and you’ll see the highchairs parked at tables. The Buff also appeals to a thrifty older crowd that likes the good value.

A developer is under contract to buy and demolish both the rambling restaurant and the motel and replace them with two “modern” hotel. Until this happens, the Buff keeps turning out fine freshly cooked meals, and locals and morel guests keep walking in the door. People don’t seem to know when the ax will fall. We got a Buff fix last weekend — the first in a couple of years. We’ll be back before the wrecking ball.

Price Check:Light starters (ranging from juice to a non-light pecan caramel quesadilla), $2-$9; hot or cold cereal with a side of toast, $6; “The Basic Breakfast,” $8-$12.50; omelettes, $8-$12.50; “Homestead Skillets,” $8-$9.50; “Benedicts in the Buff,” $8-$9.50; “The Griddle Collection,” $6-$9.50; “Southwest Collection,” $9-$10; “Salads and Home-Made Kettle Soups,” $3-$12; “Grillers” (hot melted sandwiches with cup of soup, fries or salad), $7-$10.50; “Buns in the Buff” (burgers and such with cup of soup, fries or salad), $9-$12. Most breakfasts are customizable — half-portion, gluten-free, substitute fruit for potatoes, etc.
